What is EfM?
Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year, small-group formation program run by the School of Theology at the University of the South. EfM helps participants discover the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world, developing theologically informed, reflective, and articulate seekers of God. The program has been quietly transforming the faith of lay people and clergy in our for decades. Groups of 6-12 people gather regularly to read Scripture, theology, history, and ethics together, but the unique focus of EfM is the practice of theological reflection—guided practices that invite the Christian tradition and life experience into conversation. Seminars are grounded in practices like prayer, shared worship, and genuine listening. And it’s about more than knowledge; it’s about vocational discernment. Participants explore and discern: Who am I becoming? What’s my next faithful step? EfM offers an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to a Christian life and help prepare for their ministry in the church and in the world.
In 2025, the curriculum for EfM was redesigned and a new online learning platform was launched to provide more digital resources and opportunities for engagement and interaction. Anyone who has completed an EfM years in the past can jump back into the program and discover something new. There is also a new “Wide Angle” introduction year for new participants to sample a range of readings and topics.
Opportunities to Participate
There are currently two in-person seminar groups running in our diocese (St. Mark’s, Grand Rapids and South Bend/Niles). However, many participants join online groups, learning via Zoom with other participants from around the country. A list of these groups is available on the EfM website.
In addition to new participants, we are currently seeking people who feel called to mentor an online seminar so that we can start some new groups here in the Diocese of the Great Lakes!
