Second Diocesan Convention

Prayer, Worship, and Eucharist
The heart of our gatherings together is always liturgy, “the work of the people” in which we pray and worship together; our diocesan convention is no different. The Diocese of the Great Lakes is most fully embodied when we gather for convention; therefore, we bookend our convention in prayer and gather together around Christ’s table. Through worship, we are shaped into the people and community we are called to be. We are formed by the prayers we offer and the bread and wine we share.
As we prepare to meet together for convention and as you anticipate plenary presentations, motions, amendments (and amendments to the amendments), prepare also for worship. Remind yourself that through the work of the people, the Spirit is at work, guiding us to perceive what is right and giving us the courage and grace to pursue it.
Friday: Opening Prayers
We’ll open our first plenary session (full group gathering) with prayer in our large group space after lunch on Friday. This time of prayer will set the tone for our time together and unite us in prayer over our work, business, and community and relationship-building time. Learning lessons from our last joint convention at this location, we’re building in extra time for lunch so that we can all be gathered together on time for prayer!
Friday: Compline
At the close of the day on Friday, we’ll gather for Compline, or “Night Prayer.” One of the four daily offices (prayer services), Compline focuses on quiet contemplation, confession, and prayers for God’s protection during the night. This prayer service will be led by youth in our diocese who are not only the future, but also the present, church, and everyone is encouraged to attend to be blessed by their leadership.
Saturday: Eucharist
On Saturday we will gather in the great prayer of the church, Holy Eucharist. Our service will include both Presiding Bishop Sean and our new Assisting Bishop, Bishop Anne. We anticipate that a number of people in addition to our Convention delegates will wish to come worship on-site with us; therefore, Holy Eucharist will take place at First Presbyterian Church in Saginaw. Doors will open at 9:45 a.m. for the 10:00 a.m. service. More details about the location are available below in the location section.
Important notes about our Celebration of Holy Eucharist
On-site attendance at Eucharist is not limited to registered convention attendees and delegates. All are welcome, but space is limited. More details will be available in the second call to convention in September.
There will be no banner processional or water ingathering for the Eucharist. Space will not allow for such an involved processional.
Clergy are invited to vest and process. Alb or cassock with surplice with red stole.
Saturday: Closing Prayers
When our business session is done, our work is not. Our work is completed in a final convention liturgy of prayer, the work of us, the people. These prayers will send us out to the the different parishes, communities, and watersheds of our diocese to live into who God is calling us to be together for the Mitten and the world.
