At the end of August, we introduced our new, canonically-required Mission Regions, ten groupings of congregations, summer chapels, companion ministries, and programmatic organizations that exist for mission, not governance. Each Mission Region will be led by a Dean and a regional council with a Chair and Vice Chair. Deans are appointed by the Ecclesiastical Authority (EA, currently our Standing Committee) and are to function of an extension of the Bishop’s (or EA’s) pastoral ministry within their Mission Region, convene clergy meetings regularly in the region, and meet regularly with the EA or designated staff representative as a means of communication between the Bishop/EA/diocesan staff and the congregations/Episcopal entities of the Mission Region.
Our initial appointments of deans in this structure will be equally divided between one-, two-, and three-year appointments. Thereafter, deans will be appointed to three-year terms. Deans will generally serve no more than two full consecutive terms. Although the class appointments are still forthcoming, we’re happy to share our first ten deans of Mission Regions in the Episcopal Diocese of the Great Lakes. For a map showing where each Mission Region is and which congregations and Episcopal entities it includes, visit the Mission Region page.
